HODGE PODGE DAY
Enjoy the great tips today!
Having been raised in an era and an area where it was necessary to supplement the diet with wild game and fowl, I learned as a child how to remove that taste.
Just soak your meat in buttermilk, or plain milk if that's all you have, for several hours or overnight and the so called "gamey" taste will be gone. ~Peggy
An interesting tip that I wanted to pass on...to avoid hamburgers getting fat in the center and becoming dome shaped when cooking, take a spoon and create a depression on the top center of the meat when you place the burger on the grill or pan. You'll get nice flat burgers that cook evenly through this way. ~Noreen
A spider is a 3-legged cast iron frying pan with a long handle. More or less a cast iron frying pan with a trivet built in. They were originally used over campfires by camp cooks for trail drives. ~Marie
my I used to make a "Courtship Sandwich" for Don when we were dating (hence the name). I took the King's Hawaiian bread, sliced it fairly thick, spread it with mustard and sprinkled it liberally with dried dill, then layered it with salty ham. He doesn't like cheese, but if he did, I'd put on a nice swiss. Anyway, that was it. It's super simple, but the sweet of the bread with the salt of the ham, and the tang of the mustard, makes for a party in the mouth! For long car trips or picnics with a lot of people in attendance, I do the same thing but with a package of their rolls. Talk about simple assembly! I pop out the entire set of rolls from the cardboard tray, use a bread knife to slice them open all at the same time (patience), mustard up both sides, lay on the dill and ham, and put the whole lid of all the roll tops back on at once. Then I get it back in the tray, and slide it right back in the bag it comes in. Very convenient. ~Liz
TOOTHPASTE & MORE SMOKE TIPS!
Another use for toothpaste---this comes from my days in the Air Force at
Basic Training (and NO ONE there wastes time on anything!)-- use it clean
scuff marks off of linoleum. Just a dab on a cloth, scrub in circles, and
there you go! Also on smoke from house fires-would it work to FREEZE
the clothes? I know this works with the musty-smelling books found in
yard sales and auctions! It might work on smoky clothes, too. Doesn't hurt to try. I'd also give
SUNSHINE as an option, too. ~Deb in Wisconsin
Years ago, my Grandmother came into some new bedding that had been through
a fire in a store. She soaked it all (bedding was always white then) in
hot water and 20 muleteam borax, washed and line dryed it. Some of the
heavily smoke stained items took several tries, but we used those sheets
for years afterward. ~Kathleen
